This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.
Here's a dare for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like standard biological terror, but within Together lies a deep meditation about our choices in loving each other.
A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.
The plot commences when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.
The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.
Nuanced Portrayals
A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.
The couple face the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience right now.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
