Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor
In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
